Our collaboration with the hollywood youth drop in center is rooted with maps. We are developing the idea of personal geographies with the afternoon “transitional” youth. Through mapping the connections & linkages in our lives, mapping our daily routes, and mapping the events / personal relationships, the 3-d installation will materialize. Sharing the already established idea of many different “Hollywoods”, we’ll suggest a sense of weaving – to create a beautiful all encompassing piece. This has already started to appear on our US maps, with intense interest in tracing their cross-country routes. The iconic outline of the United States will be a reoccurring theme, as most of the youth are intrigued and eager to tell their traveling story. Those that do not already have deep personal connections with this image have widely described dreams of where they are going, moving upward and onward. We intend to challenge reflection of youth homelessness through visual representations of the relationships we form and the stories we hear during this project.
Our maps act as a document for the dialogue we have had with each person. We guide them through the process of articulating their past & future. We listen to their journeys, we ask questions and they ask questions. They express this is a new experience for them, to retrace their steps & reflect on their geographies.
